To be honest I felt excited when, in 2006 my husband and I packed up our lives and moved to a small town.\u00a0 I thought the change would be good.\u00a0 I thought I would love it.\u00a0 I thought wrong.<\/p>\n
I sabotaged my happiness by not letting go of the past.\u00a0 By keeping one foot (along with my heart, body, mind and soul) firmly planted in the city, I could never fully embrace the glorious “now” offered in my new home.<\/p>\n
Until, completely fed up with myself, I wrote the following words and began to make a change.<\/p>\n
I\u2019m missing and have been since I left the city
\nTo live the small town, country life.
\nI thought I could pack myself up
\nRight along with the books, linens, and fine china.
\nAs if moving all of my worldly treasures
\nWould be enough to make me want to go,
\nBut it wasn\u2019t.
\nI dug in my heels and stayed behind.
\nTrying to live my new life without me has been hard,
\nVery hard.
\nOccasionally I go back to fetch myself,
\nAnd what fun we have.
\nEating at our favorite restaurants,
\nVisiting the museums,
\nAnd shopping.
\nOh the shoes!
\nWe bond when we buy shoes,
\nAnd I believe that maybe this time
\nIt will be enough to keep us together.
\nBut I always go back to the country alone,
\nEmpty.
\nLonging for myself is killing me,
\nRobbing me of joy.
\nIt\u2019s time for me to move on,
\nTo dump myself for someone new.
\nSomeone who will share this slow paced,
\nSimple life without complaint,
\nSomeone who will fill my life with new breath
\nInstead of choking me with reminders of the old.
\nYes, I\u2019m dumping myself,
\nBut we can still buy shoes together, okay?<\/p><\/blockquote>\nOn Instagram this morning I stumbled upon a feed that made me realize that I have again been resisting change in my life.\u00a0 That I have again been longing for myself–a different, past self–and in turn have robbed myself of joy, choking on reminders of the past.<\/p>\n
I then sought out more Instagram feeds designed to strengthen and encourage until, empowered, I felt ready to do what must be done. I’m ready to embrace the glorious “now”. I’m ready to breakup with me.<\/p>\n
It’s nothing personal we just want different things these days.\u00a0 I need someone new. Someone who will share this new chapter of my life without complaint. And I’m excited.\u00a0 So excited. To finally meet the me I’ve worked a lifetime to become.<\/p>\n
But I will still need new shoes.\u00a0 You know, from time to time.<\/p>\n
